Pope John Paul II
At the Spanish Steps

On our last afternoon in Rome, we knew that Pope John Paul II was supposed to visit the Spanish Steps for a Holy Day ceremony. We knew that if we wanted to get close enough to see him, we would need to be at the location very early in the afternoon. That was very true. We were at the site at least 2 hours before the Pope arrived and stood in a very tightly packed throng of people waiting for a brief glimpse. The photos to the left represent that very brief glimpse. All I can say, is that I have never experienced a more satisfying and emotional lift of my spirit than I experienced at that moment. He has been, is and will always be a magnificent spiritual leader of his flock.
